LA GRANGE - FAYETTE COUNTY

La Grange Demographic Information

La Grange, Texas, lies in a bend of the Colorado River at the crossroads of Highways 77 & 71, just an hour or two away from Austin, San Antonio and Houston. In the spring, wildflowers blanket the rolling hills and blackland prairies. We enjoy an annual average temperature of 69 degrees and just enough rain to keep summertime green and pretty. Large, very old live oaks, neat vegetable gardens and old-time flowers and shrubs grace many yard and streets in La Grange.

Although Fayette County was organized in 1837, the streets of La Grange had been laid out and a log blockhouse built here earlier on the Old La Bahia Road by Col. John Moore.

The establishment of Austin’s Colony ( The Old Three Hundred) brought settlers from Kentucky and Tennessee in the 1830’s. They were followed in the 1840’s by German immigrants and in the 1850’s by Czechoslovakians and Moravians. To this day , La Grange and Fayette County bear the strong ethnic influence of these early settlers in their music, food, speech, religion and traditional work ethic. Our heritage and history is visible.

Around and near the Square in Downtown La Grange are the 1890’s Courthouse (our fourth), the Veterans Memorial, the Muster Oak and Historical Marker, the "Oldest Still Operating Pharmacy in Texas", and the Chamber of Commerce (located in the 100+ year old county jail). Elsewhere in the city are The Fasion Home/Museum and the Fayette Heritage Museum/Archives/Library. Monument Hill and Kreische Brewery State Parks are just outside the city. Recreation sites include Frisch Auf! Golf Course, the Colorado River Boat Ramp/Picnic Area, Fayette Lake, and the Rice/Osborne Bird/Nature Trail. Of interest to all our visitors are the Bakeries, BBQ & Meat Markets, Dining/Lodging facilities and a variety of shops. The Fayette County Country Fair is held annually always on Labor Day Weekend. The Fair and other events attract thousands of locals and out of town visitors, such as the annual Spring Fling River Egg-stravaganza, held each April. Scenic drives East of La Grange lead to small communities such as Round Top and Fayetteville, with their historic sties, area museums, antique shops, cultural events and festivals. The famous "Painted Churches" lie to the South of La Grange as does the unique "Hostyn Grotto" in its panoramic hill top setting.

Families are important to us in La Grange. Our Schools are rated in the top 20 in the state. Our medical community underscores this importance with skilled professionals and well-equipped facilities and services. Not only is La Grange secure in excellent education and health services, we also have one of the lowest crime rates in Texas!

For a city of 4000 La Grange keeps just the right balance between historical interest, business opportunity and tourism development , and a sense of community.
